February Guild Meeting

The February guild meeting will be held at Barbie's on February 10 at 7 pm. Please bring any finished projects that you may have for "show and tell". Fabric requirements for projects being made at the retreat will be distributed. There will also be a drawing for "Fun Fabs" at the conclusion of the meeting. If you have not paid 2012 dues, they are due now and must be paid prior to attending the retreat February 24-26. Come and enjoy a time of fun and fellowship with your fellow guild members.

February Retreat 2012

The annual guild retreat will be held at the Okuma Resort February 24, 25, 26. Dinner will be enjoyed in the restaurant by the whole group on Saturday evening. The theme will be 3D quilting. The projects will be taught by Barbie, Momoe, and Gina. If you are planning to attend and have not made your reservations, contact Gina or Barbie immediately to insure room availability.
A fabric requirement list for the retreat will be distributed at the guild meeting at Barbie's on February 10.

January Workshop

The January 2012 workshop was taught by Asta Dorsett at Koza Baptist Church fellowship hall. The project was a beautiful octagonal wall hanging with a main picture/design in the center square on point with octagons surrounding it. The results were as varied as they were beautiful. Potluck lunch was enjoyed at noon. The workshop ended at 4:30. Thank you, Asta! If you came to the workshop, please bring your wall hanging for "show and tell" at the retreat or next guild meeting.

December Quilt Display at Foster Library

The guild will again be displaying quilts at the Foster library for the month of December. We will be setting up the display there on December 1, meeting at the Kitamae gate at 4:30 pm. Please let Barbie know if you plan to come so that we know how many need to be signed on. Quilts can be Christmas quilts or other quilts. You may display more than one. The quilts will be labeled with the quilter's name. After setting up the display, we will be eating dinner together, hopefully, at Macaroni Grill.

November 2011 Meeting
November meeting will be held at Barbie's. We will be receiving our fabric requirements for the November project (which has changed from last month's post-sorry!)

November's workshop will be held in the fellowship hall at Koza Baptist Church from 10-5 with a potluck lunch break at noon. Linda will be teaching a new pattern which she brought for show and tell to the October meeting. It is similar to a log cabin, but triangles. Come and learn an easy new pattern. Asta will present at a later date.

Fabric requirements:

8 quarter yard assorted fabrics ranging from light to dark using a variety of prints and textures-DO NOT use fat quarters as the full width of the fabric is needed to complete the project
5/8 yard for binding (Will make a 22" square for continuous tube binding)
1-1/4 yard backing
1-1/4 yard batting
Finished size 44"X44"

December has the party instead of a workshop. The party will be held at our regular workshop location at Koza Baptist Church fellowship hall. There will be plenty of room to display the challenge items. Please bring a potluck dish to share and an exchange gift. At the meeting it was suggested that all gifts be quilting related-either something purchased:like fat quarters in a basket or quilting tools or something you have made yourself:something that you would want to receive as a gift yourself. When asked the suggested cost of the gift, it was suggested that it be $20 or more. Challenge projects will be displayed and voted on. More details to follow.

January workshop will be taught by Helen Davis, and will be her ginger jar wall hanging-yes, the one everyone "oohed and aahed" over when we were at her house!

February retreat is confirmed! February 24-26 at Okuma. Register at the meeting. The group work room is approved for up to 28 quilters. The registration fee can be paid now to reserve your spot before it fills up. If you are SOFA status, reserve your own sleeping room. If you are Japanese (or an alien like myself), let Barbie or Gina know that you are attending.

October 2011 Workshop

October's workshop will be held October 22, 2011,in the fellowship hall at Koza Baptist Church from 10-5 with a potluck lunch break at noon. Setsuko will be teaching us her original design for a floppy-eared elephant quilt which can be made in several sizes. Fabric requirements and cutting instructions will be passed out at the October guild meeting at Barbie's. Be sure to bring your "trees" if you have not already turned them in for the thank-you quilt for the church letting us use their building for our workshops.

On September 17, Barbie will be teaching a pattern called "The March of the Crabs". The workshop will be from 10am to 5pm in the fellowship hall at Koza Baptist Church. A potluck lunch will be held at noon. Bring a dish to share. Hope to see you there!

At the September Guild meeting on 9/9/11, we will receive the last block of the month pattern. You must be in attendance to receive the pattern. We will also discuss the material list for the workshop on 9/17. Come and share fellowship and light refreshments. Please feel free to bring fruit, a snack, or dessert to share (Anne, our "cookie lady" retired and returned to the US). We hope that you all had a good summer and we are looking forward to an exciting year. August 2011 Guild Workshop

We had a good turnout for the August workshop where we made baby quilts for Sendai, Japan. Those who were unable to attend the workshop helped by taking quilt kits home to finish. We finished about 43 quilt tops. When finished, we should have 50 quilts to donate.

Our May 2011 workshop will be taught by Penny. She will be teaching how to make a purse/tote bag called "Zip and Go". You can order a pattern online from Random Threadz (www.randomthreadz.com) or e-mail questions to (randomthreadz@yahoo.com). Barbie will have kits available with the materials needed for sale or you can bring your own. The workshop will be held May 14 from 10am to 5pm in the fellowship hall at Koza Baptist Church. A potluck lunch will be held at noon. Bring a dish to share.

1/2 yard of vinyl pet screen
Fabric- 2 different colors for pockets; third color for pocket lining; lining fabric can be the same as the pocket front or different; bottom and bottom lining are made from left over pieces.
Non-directional fabric-back pocket-1 fat quarter; front pocket-1 fat quarter; pocket linings-1/2 yard or 2 fat quarters; bottom is made from leftover pieces-sew scraps together if necessary.

Barbie has returned to Okinawa and will be hosting the OIPG guild meeting on May 6 at 7 pm at her home. Materials list for the upcoming workshop will be distributed as will the next BOM pattern. Okuma Retreat

Our annual Okuma retreat was held February 18-20. The ladies enjoyed the fellowship, teaching, and yummy food. They were awesome!

Baby Quilt Drive

The Baby quilt drive went really well! We were able to complete 25 quilt tops at the workshop, and we had about 40 baby quilts finished that were donated to Chubu Hospital's NICU unit. They were thankful that you helped to bless their families who have special babies.

The December OIPG meeting will be held on December 10, 2010, at Barbie's. We will be passing out the directions for the next Thimbleberries Block of the Month. The pattern instructions will be demonstrated at the meeting. We are collecting dues now for 2011 so that in December we can start signing up for the Okuma retreat. September 2010 Workshop

The September workshop has been moved to September 25 due to a conflict with the International Christian Women's Club activity. On September 25, Mr. Adachi, the President of Bernina in Tokyo, will be demonstrating the new Bernina. He is also willing to service any Berninas that need work done. He usually brings a project for a cost of ¥1000 that you can make at the workshop, and Mr. Kunioshi usually brings thread/needles/etc. So you may want to bring extra ¥ so that you are able to buy the special things that he brings. The baby quilt project for the NICU has been postponed until October, so bring your UFOs to work on in September. Bring a dish to share for the potluck. The potluck and workshop will be held in the fellowship hall at Koza Baptist Church. Hope to see you there.

Sorry for the late posting about our workshops this summer. I was Stateside and out of the loop. In June, Hideko taught a workshop for a small 2 piece purse that attached with velcro. Hideko designed the purse herself.
In July, Asta taught a workshop for a log cabin table runner. I hear that both workshops went well, and that the food was delicious. Both workshops were held in the fellowship hall at Koza Baptist Church. If anyone took pictures at either or both workshops, please send them to me or to Jim so that they can be posted for everyone to enjoy.

June Meeting

The June meeting for OIPG will be held on Friday, June 11, at Gina's house. Please bring show and tell and a snack/dessert to share. Hideko's purse will be shown and a materials list passed out. Basically, you will need a basic color plus scraps. Directions are below:
Take Highway 85 (the road that is just outside of Kadena Gate Two). Highway 85 goes around Kadena. Follow Highway 85 to the North or to the left of Kadena Gate Two. After about a mile Highway 85 will turn right. Follow Highway 85 as it turns right. Stay on Highway 85 for about two miles - you will cross Highway 329 and when you see the Family Mart on the right and the Yellow box on the right. Turn right at the light at Family Mart, then right again at the first street (behind Family Mart). Gina’s house is on the left almost to the end of the street.

Hideko will be teaching us to make a change purse/wallet that she designed and made herself using the smallest of scraps-triangles left over from other projects. Come and bring your scraps.

May Workshop 2010

Our May workshop was held at Koza Baptist Church fellowship hall on Friday, 5/22, beginning at 10 am. We started off with a "cobweb sale" where the ladies sold/bought fabric/scraps/strips/etc. to/from other members to clean up their stashes. After the potluck lunch, the ladies made rooster pin cushions and thread catcher hanging bags. Fun was had by all.

Okuma Retreat March 2010

The March retreat was awesome. We had a great time and finished many projects. Barbie taught a mystery quilt using 2" strips-a great way to use up stash! Everyone brought 10 strips to use themselves and 10 strips to share with others. She also taught a pattern using large print rectangles paired with 9 patch squares that flowed around the large prints. Asta taught a stained glass window quilt that used 12 squares and sashing (grout).The quilts turned out great! Some newbies made name tags, some made chicken pin cushions-cute. Foster Library Exhibition

New printed schedule cards for Guild activities for the remainder of 2009 are available.
Christmas Challenge fabric will be distributed at the September meeting for those who have not yet received it.

We have been invited to have a quilt exhibition at the Foster Library in November. Please prepare quilts made this year (or other favorites) by putting a hanging sleeve on the backs of the quilts. We will be hanging the quilts on November 1, and they will remain on display the whole month of November.
We have also been invited to display quilted Christmas items at the December meeting of the International Christian Women's Club. Contact Barbie for details.

Also, November 13, 14, 15 the Guild will have an UFO Weekend Retreat at Okuma. Last chance to pay for Okuma will be at the October Guild Workshop.

September Workshop - 20 September

The September Workshop will be the Japanese Bow.

Here is the Supply List:

Background: White or light cream 17 X 16 inches or slightly larger
Ribbons: fat quarters or less of 3 different colors and 3 tints of each of the colors (for instance light blue, dark blue, light purple, dark purple, light green and dark green)
Bonding paper: about 1/2 meter of a Heat & Bond type material
Borders: Select fabric for 2 smaller borders (1 1/2 " wide) and 1 larger border of focus fabric border (3 1/2" wide).
Paper: something thin enough to trace the master layout for the final design

September Monthly Meeting

Our September meeting will be 12 Sept at the normal location. We look forward to getting back into our normal routine.

8 August Meeting

The August meeting will be held as scheduled. There are several important items that will need to be collected in Aug.

1. We have been invited to show quilts at the Foster Library during month of September. If you have quilt you wish to display, please put a hanging sleeve on the back of the quilt before submitting it. Quilts must be submitted before 30 August 2008. Please contact Gina or Barbie if you have a quilt for the exhibit.

2. We have been given the opportunity to submit a block in the Tokyo Quilt Show in January 2009. All blocks submitted will be placed in quilts and raffled off for charity. This year the theme is STARS. Any type of star will work. It can be paper pieced, appliqued, etc. The only requirement is the block can only have an inside measurement of 20 cm with an additional 1 cm edge for a total block of 22 cm square. Blocks must be given to Gina or Setsuko no later then 23 August 2008.

3. Don't forget the Okuma Retreat 24-26 Oct 2008. Sign ups will begin at the September meeting.

We had lots of fun at the 2007 Christmas Party and the Winter Challenge. We had three divisions;
beginner (project on the right), intermediate and advance.

December 15, 2007 Workshop

The December Workshop will be our annual Christmas Party. It will be held at Kenny's in the Plaza Shopping Center. Beginning at 7:00 pm and will cost 2500 yen/person. Bring a quilt related gift to exchange.

Winter Challenge items are due. In July we were given a fat quarter of this fabric to make into a completed project. It will be exciting to see all the entries.

Quilting Tips

No- Slip Rulers

To keep rulers from slipping on fabric when cutting, brush a thin, small spot of rubber cement on the back of the ruler in several places. If you want to remove the rubber cement later, rub the spot and the cement will ball up and come off.

Fabric Storage Idea

I store fabric in a closet shoe bag. You can hang it over the back of a door for out-of-the-way storage.

Lori will be teaching a cute and fun duck pattern called Ducks All Around by Annette Ornelas. This pattern finishes to 41" X 41".
